Traverse City, MI – May 31, 2025 – Standing With Immigrant Neighbors in Northern Michigan
A recent Northern Express article highlights the growing fear among immigrants in northern Michigan as immigration enforcement increases statewide. Immigration Law & Justice Michigan (ILJ-MI), with offices in Traverse City and across the state, is seeing rising anxiety among both undocumented and legal immigrants—even those with green cards or visas.
Increased ICE activity, including the opening of a large detention center in Baldwin, has raised concern ahead of peak agricultural season, when many migrant workers arrive. ILJ-MI attorney Marcelo Betti and Executive Director Julie Powers emphasize that legal status no longer guarantees peace of mind. People are delaying citizenship applications and avoiding public spaces out of fear.
ILJ-MI continues to offer legal help, know-your-rights education, and support for vulnerable individuals and families. As Powers notes, “When rights erode for immigrants, the foundation of due process for all of us weakens.”
